Habitat for Humanity of Broome County
Needs Volunteers
Broome County Habitat for Humanity (BCHFH) is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses. Contact John Paul Bokal at 748-3044 for details SCORE Needs Volunteers The Binghamton SCORE needs additional volunteers to help as counselors with small businesses. SCORE meets every Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 AM to provide free business counseling to small businesses that request advice. Your participation can be part time because many of the volunteers travel during various times of the year or have work commitments and do not make every meeting. SCORE is nationwide and has been in existence for 37 years and has 12,000 retired and working executives to help small businesses start and grow. The number of small businesses that are requesting assistance in Binghamton is growing very rapidly and is the reason for the request for volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Nick Crispino at 607-773-1420 and lend your experiences to help small businesses. It will also be a learning experience for you.
Kids Explore Program at Binghamton University Binghamton University will again this summer conduct a Kid's Explore Program to teach grade school students some fundamentals of science & engineering. Last year two of our volunteers helped with the classes and this year the University is in need of four volunteers. This is not a baby-sitting role but to help the student with their experiments. In addition, Binghamton University is applying of an Elfun Co0mmunity Foundation grant to help with the cost of the program. Local businesses do provide some of the program. The program is conducted the week of August 16, 2004 and runs from 9 AM to 3 PM each day of the week. Contact Nick Crispino to volunteer for this worthwhile project. |
